Dr. Wachtel was raised in Buffalo, New York and then served in the U.S. Air Force as a Chinese translator and Morse Code Operator from 1962-1966. Upon returning to civilian life he enrolled at SUNY/Buffalo where he received his Ph.D in Sociology in 1982. After holding a number of different faculty positions around the country he settled here at Lexington Community College. Currently he is the Coordinator of the Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, and Law Enforcement Area and is the faculty advisor for the International Students Association. During his tenure at LCC he has been active in promoting educational relationships between LCC and Changsha College of Education, Hunan Province, China. On each of his three trips to China he has taught English to students there. In 1995, during his first trip to China, Dr. Wachtel actually had the opportunity to pursue his long distance running hobby by jogging through the Forbidden City pictured here.
