Chantix, varenicline, is a smoking cessation drug that contains no nicotine. It works in two ways. It attaches itself to the nicotine receptors in the brain, therefor, not allowing nicotine to reach these receptors. Chantix also activates these receptors to release smaller amounts of dopamine than nicotine. 44% of CHANTIX users had quit smoking during weeks 9 to 12 of treatment.
The dosage of Chantix is as follows:
Days 1 - 3: 0.5 mg once daily
Days 4 - 7: 0.5 mg twice daily
Day 8 - End of treatment: 1 mg twice daily
This dosage schedule is halved for severe renal patients.
The total course of the treatment should last 12 weeks.
