Job Search
Job SearchOnce you complete your degree the next journey is to start your career. Below are some resources to help you in that process. First you will need a good, clean resume. Your resume should be clear, concise and totally true. Key words are important to employers and frequently resumes are scanned for specific skill sets like “motor controls,” “PLCs,” or “hydraulics.” As well, any information you put on your resume must be true. If at any point it is discovered that you lied on a resume you may be fired, even after years of service. The purpose of the resume is to get a prospective employer to call you, so contacting you should be very easy. E-mails names like "wackywonker" may be fun with friends, but will not work for a professional resume. Create a new e-mail with an approriate name. Remember that your phone message may be the prospective employer’s first impression of you. So if your cell of home OGM sais “This is Joe ya no wadda do;” change it. You should have 2 versions of your resume, one a formatted resume with different fonts, the second should be a text copy that can easily be pasted into a simple text e-mail. Most companies will not accept attachments. When you send a resume by e-mail, USPS or courier (friend) you should always include a Cover Letter. The Cover letter should establish a connection with the prospective employer and convince them to look at your resume. BCTC has a Student Employment Services Office who can help you prepare a resume and prepare for an interview |
